Sports & Innovation to Reshape Mexico-France Business Landscape
STORY INLINE POST
Q: Business France is organizing the French Sport & Innovation Summit in Mexico City. What were the primary operational criteria used to select the specific French companies participating in this delegation?
A: Our primary criterion was selecting companies tightly aligned with the summit's three core pillars: sports, innovation, and wellness. However, we also strategically leveraged the momentum of the upcoming World Cup. We knew many French executives would be traveling to Mexico for the tournament and wanted to maximize their trip with a solid business agenda. Because of this, our selection criteria expanded to include everything from foundational sectors like logistics, which are indispensable for tournament infrastructure, to specialized companies looking to position their products directly within the football industry.
In the wellness and health track, our focus was on bringing France's deep expertise in performance and preventive nutrition to the event. We selected companies offering inside-out wellness solutions, which is a major market trend right now. Attendees will be introduced to premium French food supplements, clean proteins, creatine, and anti-aging collagen treatments designed for both high-performance athletes and everyday gym-goers.
Finally, we looked for unique corporate profiles with inspiring stories and replicable solutions for the Mexican market. A key example accompanying our attendees is AZZA Fencing, a company founded by a former Olympic fencing medalist turned successful entrepreneur. She will lead an inspirational fireside chat to close out the day, sharing her transition from elite sports to business leadership, with a brand that is actively looking to capitalize on Mexico’s rapidly growing racket sports market, such as padel and squash.
Q: Why is now the ideal moment to host this summit, and what major trends and industry partners will the event highlight?
A: This summit provides a critical opportunity to reunite our Franco-Mexican ecosystem across the sports, wellness, and innovation sectors, especially since it has been some time since we hosted an event of this scale. France has a strong corporate footprint in Mexico’s sports and tourism industries, which works heavily in our favor. We are proud to feature major French global leaders and strategic allies at the event, such as Uriage and Decathlon, the latter of which is celebrating its 10th anniversary in Mexico, and we will be joined directly by their Director General.
Beyond celebrating these milestones, the summit is deeply focused on where the industry is heading, particularly regarding connectivity and sports technology. Wearable tech, like smartwatches that track heart rate and caloric burn, is no longer just for competitive athletes; it is for anyone aiming to feel stronger and healthier. Moving our bodies directly improves mental health, and technology is now bridging the gap between physical activity and data-driven nutrition.
A prime example of this is our main event partner, Mach Group Mx. They have developed an advanced application that syncs with users' Apple Watches or Garmins to interpret biometric data that the average person might not know how to read. By analyzing metrics relative to a user's height, body mechanics, and specific personal goals, whether that is weight loss or functional strength, this technology democratizes high-level health insights. The summit will bring these innovative, lesser-known solutions to light, showing how technology can help the broader Mexican public live longer, healthier, and higher-quality lives.
Q: Why did Business France identify the sports and innovation intersection as the main driver for bilateral trade in 2026, rather than traditional industrial sectors?
A: Major sporting events represent a profound momentum for a nation's culture. They showcase a country’s capacity to host international crowds and manage complex infrastructure, connectivity, and public security. France and Mexico share valuable common ground here. Following the Paris Olympics in 2024, we established a dedicated legacy program to share best practices and insights on minimizing environmental impact, which is knowledge that only nations with a proven history of organizing massive events possess.
Mexico has excelled at this since the 1968 Olympics, a capability displayed year after year through the Formula 1 Grand Prix and the iconic Mexico City Marathon. To explore this operational expertise, the marathon's deputy director of organization will join us at the summit to share firsthand insights.
Events of this scale transcend sports; they carry significant economic implications for tourism, consumer goods, and cultural or gastronomic promotion across all industries. This intersection creates an incredibly rich environment for business and cultural exchange. Furthermore, Mexico ranks as the top country globally for active runners, a statistic that puts the nation firmly on the international map for foreign companies looking to invest and strategically position their health and wellness products.
Q: In an MBN Expert Contributor piece, you noted that Mexico has seen rising demand for regulated, science-based nutritional solutions. What is the actual value of this sector in Mexico, and where do you see the most potential for French companies?
A: We have had a fantastic opportunity to promote the strong demand and accessibility of the Mexican dietary supplement market directly to the French Dietary Supplement Union (SYNADIET). What we have realized is that in terms of regulation, Mexico is one of the most attractive countries for international suppliers. A major driver behind this is the high level of education among Mexican consumers regarding dietary supplements. Historically, the country deeply understands the value of natural products and supplements for health improvement; it is rooted in everything from traditional grandmothers' remedies to everyday ingredients like aloe vera, which is widely consumed here.
Furthermore, Mexican consumers are highly knowledgeable about the beneficial effects of the specific molecules and products used in modern supplements. This is precisely where the French offering differentiates itself and holds a true competitive advantage, as many of our products are backed by scientific studies proving the efficacy of their active ingredients, rather than relying solely on consumer satisfaction surveys.
In France, we have a deeply ingrained culture of consuming vitamins and food supplements, alongside a strong tradition of marine-derived products, such as omega-3s and marine algae, which provide massive health benefits. We even have a thriving thalassotherapy and wellness tourism sector.
The Mexican consumer is increasingly sophisticated, carefully inspecting product labels and seeking out specific benefits or active compounds. We see this trend clearly in the protein supplement segment. For instance, we are delighted to feature the brand Habits at the summit, a company specializing in advanced formulations. Today, consumers do not just look at how many grams of protein they get per scoop; they look for prebiotics, probiotics, digestibility, and plant-based or vegan certifications. Whether it is vitamins, collagen, or creatine, Mexican consumers know exactly what they want, and this sophisticated demand works heavily in our favor.
Q: You mentioned that Franco-Mexican cooperation in sports nutrition focuses on adapting scientific approaches rather than importing ready-made products. How can Mexican researchers and local manufacturers actively contribute their own raw inputs or regional expertise to these functional food and hydration frameworks?
A: That kind of regional integration is exactly what our academic and scientific networks are designed to facilitate. Business France is just one branch of the French Embassy, and we work alongside several other key services focused directly on research and academic exchange. For instance, the French Research Institute maintains a physical presence in Mexico through a long-standing alliance with UNAM to develop various joint scientific projects. Additionally, our Academic, Scientific, and Cultural Cooperation service features specialized attachés dedicated to health and academia. Through this branch, we offer targeted scholarships enabling Mexican researchers to study in France, while simultaneously hosting French researchers and medical doctors here in Mexico to drive bilateral exchange.
While our current summit focus highlights dietary supplements and wellness, France and Mexico have actually spent decades building robust public health cooperation programs. One of our most outstanding achievements is the ongoing implementation of the French emergency medical services model, known as the Emergency Medical Assistance Service (SAMU). Thanks to partnerships with various state-level health institutions, we have successfully collaborated with states like Jalisco, Coahuila, and Puebla. We are actively expanding this model to other Mexican states so both nations can find inspiration in each other's frameworks and work hand-in-hand. At Business France, we always welcome dialogue with individuals or organizations looking to advance these bilateral initiatives. We remain fully available to help channel those ideas to the appropriate teams.
Q: Since Mexico’s sports and wellness market is already thriving, how is France bringing new innovation and global trends to complement that growth?
A: Mexico is already making excellent progress on its own, thanks to various public policies implemented across recent years and administrations. For instance, it was incredibly encouraging to see Mexico drop from first to fourth place globally in childhood obesity statistics, which was followed just weeks later by data highlighting the massive number of active runners in the country. Mexican fitness enthusiasts do not just travel for major spectator events, as we saw with the massive turnout at the Qatar World Cup 20222, they also travel internationally to compete. Many are focused on running the world's Top 7 marathons to collect the prestigious major medals.
Mexico is doing very well, so our objective from the French side is to look at how we can support this momentum with specialized innovation and expertise. For the upcoming FIFA World Cup 2026, we are working with different government institutions to implement solutions from Wheelskeep, a French company specializing in secure, temporary bicycle parking for massive events, which promotes smooth and sustainable mobility. Beyond this, we have shared our official Paris 2024 Olympic Legacy Report across our networks in Mexico to identify long-term, mutually beneficial infrastructure and organizational opportunities.
We love seeing how global sports trends inspire the local market. For example, padel continues to grow exponentially, and Hyrox is launching incredibly strongly here; we will have Puma to talk about it during our event. I actually participated in the Mexico City Hyrox event, and it was spectacular. These fitness trends are turning Mexican cities into sports tourism destinations, giving people excellent reasons to travel to beautiful locations like Acapulco or Cancun. The intersection of sports and innovation is growing rapidly, with immense potential still ahead. Combined with Mexico's deep experience in hosting international events and its world-renowned hospitality, we are incredibly excited for the massive celebration that awaits us with the World Cup.
Q: By the end of 2026, what objectives must this summit meet to fulfill the strategic objectives of Business France México?
A: Business France's primary objective is to reinforce the strategic alliance between France and Mexico. Specifically, as a commercial service, our mandate centers on driving investment projects across all sectors. Our diverse team of 15 specialists actively manages trade and investment portfolios spanning mining, automotive, heavy industry, technology, and agribusiness.
We are seeing incredible traction backed by major institutional announcements. Just recently, Sanofi announced a significant new expansion and clinical research investment here, which perfectly underscores the deep confidence French corporations and our government place in Mexico’s long-term growth potential, even amid a complex global economy and geopolitical uncertainty.
The relationship between France and Mexico is anchored in a deep, historic friendship. In fact, this year we are celebrating the two-hundredth anniversary of bilateral diplomatic relations between our two nations. The French Sports Innovation Summit is a cornerstone initiative under this bicentennial umbrella, uniquely spotlighting the sports industry. Following this event, the second half of the year will feature the eighth annual French Healthcare Day, a milestone edition entirely dedicated to life sciences and healthcare innovation.
Our professional network eagerly anticipates these platforms each year, and the bar continues to rise. We are incredibly fortunate to have outstanding allies among Mexican private and public sector leaders, highlighted by our extensive cooperative work with regulatory bodies like COFEPRIS. This is undeniably a defining moment for France and Mexico.
Business France is the national agency supporting the international development of the French economy. It fosters export growth among French businesses, facilitates international investment into France, and promotes the country’s economic image globally.
