The Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development (SADER) unveiled a commemorative lottery ticket celebrating "Our Wealth: Mexican Papaya." The initiative aims to highlight the significance of Mexico's native plants in agriculture and nutrition, as well as to recognize the invaluable contributions of farmers and industry stakeholders.

Mexico boasts 21,000ha dedicated to papaya cultivation, with a production of nearly 1.2Mt in 2022 alone, marking a 5.4% increase from the previous year. Papaya cultivation spans 19 states, ranging from Tamaulipas to Yucatan along the Gulf of Mexico and from Baja California to Chiapas along the Pacific coast, with backyard orchards being a common sight in Mexican households.

Most of Mexico's papaya production (81%) is concentrated in Oaxaca, Colima, Chiapas, Veracruz, and Michoacan. Oaxaca leads production efforts with 367,000t, followed by Colima with 199,000t. Globally, Mexico ranks as the third-largest papaya producer, contributing 7.9% of the world's production, with significant exports to the United States, Canada, Germany, and the Netherlands.

With an annual per capita consumption of 7.6kg, papaya's popularity stems not only from its taste but also from its nutritional benefits, including dietary fiber, antioxidants, vitamins, and minerals. Furthermore, papaya finds diverse applications in the food industry, such as meat tenderizing and beer clarification.

The celebration is a collaborative effort involving various entities, including SADER, the National Archives' Historical and Cultural Memory of Mexico, the National Lottery (LOTENAL), and papaya producers. Its purpose is to highlight the cultural, historical, and economic significance of Mexican papaya, promoting its production and trade domestically and internationally.

Representatives from Oaxaca and Colima shared insights into the evolution of papaya cultivation in their regions, emphasizing advancements in technology and sustainability practices. Both regions have made significant strides in enhancing quality, profitability, and competitiveness while adapting to environmental challenges such as drought.

The National Service of Health, Safety, and Agri-Food Quality (SENASICA) underscored the importance of recognizing industries like papaya production, which prioritize health and safety standards. The implementation of the Papaya Action Plan since 2020 has led to the certification of numerous production and packaging units across various states, ensuring consumer confidence by preventing contamination risks.
