During the period from January to December 2023, wholesale sales surged to 55,119 units, marking a 6.3% increase compared to the previous record in 2007 and a 33% surge compared to 2022, setting a new record for the heavy vehicle industry, revealed the National Association of Bus, Truck and Tractor-Trailer Manufacturers (ANPACT) in a press release.

Wholesale sales in December 2023 witnessed a 17.6% growth compared to 2022 and a 83.2% rise compared to 2019. The cargo segment set a record of 46,601 wholesale units sold in 2023, 9.5% higher than in 2007, while the passenger segment exhibited a 57.1% annual sales growth compared to 2022.

Another aspect of this surge is seen in the vehicle's energy sources. In 2023, 22 electric vehicles were sold, marking a 340.0% growth compared to 2022. Additionally, sales of vehicles running on natural gas increased by 275.9%, while hybrid vehicles witnessed a 40.4% uptick, emphasizing a notable shift toward alternative fuel sources within the industry.

The heavy vehicle manufacturing sector figures hit a historic high of 222,813 units in 2023, a substantial 10.2% increase compared to the previous peak in 2019. Although December 2023 witnessed a 5.6% decline in production compared to the same month in 2022, the month's output was still a notable 8.4% higher than the previous year's monthly average, reflecting sustained productivity despite seasonal fluctuations.

On the export front, the industry displayed a global competitiveness. With 177,541 units exported in 2023, there was a significant 5.2% increase compared to the previous export peak in 2019 and a 6.4% surge compared to 2022. Notably, exports of long-distance buses saw a 70.7% growth.

The United States accounted for 96.0% of the total exports, with Canada representing 2.3%. The North American region collectively represented 98.4% of total exports.
