The leading Mexican department store Liverpool aims to become the largest EV distributor in Mexico in alliance with Chinese OEM BYD. Furthermore, recent research by Allianz Partners shows three out of five drivers in the world would buy a hybrid car or EV. The report highlights that younger generations are more open to buying such units.

Liverpool to Enter the EV Race in Mexico
Liverpool aims to become Mexico’s largest EV distributor by establishing an alliance with Chinese OEM BYD. The retailer’s strategy is to integrate electromobility into the customer shopping experience, by offering clients attractive automotive credits and access to charging points, among other benefits. 

 

Mexico Has the Fastest Charging Station for Electric Cars
The first fast charging station for electric and hybrid cars in the world was inaugurated in Puebla on June 21. The station has a capacity of 1MW and can recharge battery vehicles up to 20 times faster than any other traditional charger.

Chinese automotive entrepreneurs have shown interest in investing in Mexico as part of the nearshoring phenomenon. Mexico received US$13.4 billion worth of foreign investment in 1Q23 thanks to the nearshoring boom, which is equivalent to more than 70% of the total investments captured in 2022. Moreover, between January and September 2022, Chinese investments in Mexico represented 40% of the nearshoring demand.

The preference for electric vehicles increases among younger generations, with three out of four adults between the ages of 26 and 40 saying they would prefer an electric vehicle.
