ESG criteria have become integral to the operations of automotive companies worldwide, aligning with the global shift towards sustainable practices. In Mexico, these principles have emerged as pivotal driving forces shaping business strategies within the automotive sector, encapsulating environmental impact, social responsibilities, and governance practices.

During Mexico Business Summit 2023, a profound dialogue unfolded at the panel titled "Private Sector Priorities in Driving Forward Automotive Industry Sustainability," featuring influential voices including Nazareth Black, CEO, Zacua; Rodrigo Mora, Americas Senior Manager for Sustainability and AS320, Autoliv; Enrique Marín, Head of Corporate Strategy and Corporate Central Function, Audi Mexico; and Raúl Sifuentes, EHS & Facilities Senior Manager, Kia Motors México. At the core of their discussion Black laid a fundamental question: What does pollution trigger in the industry’s conscience?

Currently, ESG performance and strategy play a pivotal role in the Mexican automotive industry. The focus on Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) criteria has become increasingly crucial for automotive companies, aligning with global trends emphasizing sustainable practices.

In the Mexican automotive landscape, ESG considerations are driving forces shaping business strategies. Environmental factors encompass reducing emissions, implementing renewable energy sources, and ensuring compliance with environmental regulations. Social aspects prioritize employee welfare, community engagement, and upholding human rights. Governance practices concentrate on transparency, diverse board leadership, and financial integrity.

Addressing the environmental challenges within the automotive industry requires a transition toward cleaner energy sources to mitigate the adverse impacts of greenhouse gas emissions. Tackling pollutants emitted by vehicles, such as carbon monoxide and nitrogen oxides, holds critical importance for public health enhancement and improving overall air quality.

The journey towards sustainability involves a delicate balance of resource consumption, minimizing environmental degradation, and significantly reducing waste generation. Embracing electric vehicles, integrating sustainable manufacturing materials, and adopting eco-friendly logistics strategies emerge as pivotal solutions in curbing emissions and effectively reducing the industry's carbon footprint through the implementation of efficient transportation practices.

“The industry's substantial contribution to greenhouse gas emissions underscores a pressing need for a sustainable supply chain across businesses of all scales,” highlighted Mora.

The green transition demands investment, however, said Black. Because of this, incentives are necessary, especially for SMEs to participate in the industry’s decarbonization efforts and for innovation to be possible across the entire supply chain. “Private companies have a responsibility to embrace sustainability,” added Marín. “Still, government support through incentives and policies that facilitate a seamless energy transition is also paramount.”

Participants in the conversation shed light on the challenges faced by smaller companies lacking the financial capacity to transition to eco-friendly practices. The need for incentives, technological assistance, and educational reforms emerged as crucial areas requiring immediate attention and support.

Moreover, the discourse delved into the pivotal role of the government in establishing clear and attainable sustainability objectives. “A collaborative approach is key between the government and private enterprises to drive forward eco-friendly initiatives. A united front is essential to achieving sustainable outcomes within the automotive sector,” said Sifuentes.
