CRE is taking steps to standardize EV charger tariffs, while a regulatory framework is still lacking. Walter Ángel, Commissioner, CRE, highlighted the need for regulation for electromobility to ensure the proper functioning of the market. One significant proposal involves creating a tariff group to determine the cost of energy used for vehicle recharging.

In an interview with Reforma, Ángel emphasized the importance of establishing fair pricing methodologies for charging electric vehicles. Currently, the absence of regulations allows some companies to sell energy at significantly higher prices, he says.

To address this issue, CRE plans to install a tariff group and collaborate with stakeholders to develop a legal mechanism for setting tariffs. CFE is expected to play a pivotal role in implementing this new tariff scheme and regulating energy prices.

The commission has submitted a preliminary draft on general provisions for electromobility to the National Commission for Regulatory Improvement (CONAMER). This draft aims to promote the development of charging infrastructure for electric vehicles, establish tariff methodologies, and create a platform to monitor the evolution of charging infrastructure nationwide.

Proposed regulations come in response to the growing sales of electric cars and increasing requests for charging point installations to the CFE. Despite this demand, the absence of a legal framework has hindered the establishment of rates for vehicle recharging.
