Historic heat waves have been hitting Mexico during the past few months, according to data from the Autonomous National University of Mexico (UNAM). This year, experts said the heat wave has been exacerbated by an ongoing drought, leaving the ground parched and the air dry. The heat waves have affected thousands and caused over 100 deaths.

The extreme heat poses significant challenges for those working outdoors, such as construction workers and laborers, who have reported feeling dizzy, lightheaded and, in some cases, even fainting. Residents of northern Mexico have been some of the most affected. Nuevo Leon has reported most deaths from heatstroke or similar causes, for a total of 81 deaths during 2023, according to the General Directorate of Epidemiology (DGE). The country has seen a total of 167 deaths from heat related causes during that period.  are seeking refuge from a severe heat wave, with some areas experiencing record-breaking temperatures.

Considering the risk these heat waves pose to the general public, organizations and governments in some states are deploying swift actions to help them. For example, in Mexicali, Baja California, the local government has been providing water and other supplies to the most affected individuals. Shelters have been opened for those who have no other place to seek respite from the heat. In Mexicali, temperatures reached a scorching 50°C last week.

Experts predict that the heat wave will persist for the next few days and urge citizens to take precautions and stay cool. Preventive measures include staying hydrated, seeking shade whenever possible and avoiding strenuous activities.

By March, the heat wave had claimed the lives of at least 112 people, with the majority of deaths occurring in the country's northern states, where temperatures have consistently soared above 40°C.

This heat wave serves as a stark reminder of the risks associated with climate change. As global temperatures continue to rise, heat waves are becoming more frequent and severe, posing threats to people and ecosystems worldwide. Addressing this issue is of utmost importance and requires serious attention from all concerned parties.
