Amazon Web Services (AWS) has revealed plans to establish a new AWS infrastructure Region in Mexico by early 2025, providing developers, startups, enterprises, and various organizations more options for running applications and serving end users.

As part of its long-term investment in Latin America, AWS plans to invest over US$5 billion in Mexico over the next 15 years, reinforcing its commitment to advancing and securing cloud technologies in the region.

The upcoming AWS Mexico (Central) Region will comprise three Availability Zones at launch, contributing to AWS's existing 105 Availability Zones across 33 global regions. This expansion reflects AWS's dedication to supporting high-availability applications through redundancy, low-latency networks, and independent power, cooling, and physical security in each Availability Zone.

“AWS is excited to see thousands of customers in nearly every industry across Mexico innovate and grow,” says Prasad Kalyanaraman, Vice President of Infrastructure Services, AWS. “Our investment in Mexico reflects AWS’s long-term commitment to customers so they can take advantage of advanced technologies like artificial intelligence and machine learning. We look forward to helping customers in Mexico meet data residency preferences and deliver cloud-based applications with low latency, accelerating the country’s digital transformation and fueling economic growth.”

The AWS Mexico Region will allow customers to address data residency preferences, store content securely in Mexico, and experience lower latency, meeting the growing demand for cloud services across Latin America. This move is expected to accelerate Mexico's digital transformation, fueling economic growth and providing a foundation for innovation in various sectors.

AWS investment will also focus on the development of digital skills. The company aims to hire and train local personnel to operate and support the new region. AWS's investment is expected to accelerate digital transformation and benefit customers across various industries, including financial services, telecommunications, media, and healthcare.

“Cloud services are an essential part of everyday life, helping us to digitally and economically transform Mexico,” says Mexico’s Minister of Economy, Raquel Buenrostro. “We welcome AWS’s investment and expansion in Mexico because it is a sign of trust and demonstrates conditions are right to support the nearshoring trend across many sectors of our economy. We also welcome AWS’s investment in training students, micro, small and medium-sized companies, and digital entrepreneurs in Mexico at scale.”

Emiliano Calderón, Head, Mexican Government’s National Digital Strategy, applauded AWS's commitment to infrastructure development, which aligns with the government's policy to support technology companies that aim to increase digital and financial inclusion.

“AWS’s infrastructure expansion in Queretaro is a testament to our state’s commitment to advanced technology and innovation, and to the work we’ve done to create an environment where technology companies can thrive,” says Governor of Queretaro, Mauricio Kuri. “This investment reinforces our role as a leader in Mexico’s digital transformation and helps us drive economic growth. With AWS, we look forward to adding jobs, generating new businesses, and expanding opportunities for the people of Queretaro and across the country.”

AWS says that several organizations in Mexico, including Aeroméxico, Banco Santander Mexico, Cinépolis, and Vector Casa de Bolsa, expressed their support for the AWS Region in Mexico.
