Liberty Networks, a company that provides technology infrastructure and enterprise connectivity, part of Liberty Latin America (LLA) in Latin America and the Caribbean, unveiled a strategic collaboration with Gold Data, a US telecommunications infrastructure provider across the Americas. This partnership aims to combine their respective subsea cable systems, GD-1 and LN-1, to create a subsea system to enhance connectivity between North and Latin America.

According to a press release by both companies, the project is designed to establish two diverse routes, boasting the shortest latency from Mexico to the United States. The subsea cable system is set to enhance connectivity between critical data hubs in Mexico City and Queretaro, extending onward to the United States through novel routes. The system is expected to extend its reach to link emerging data hubs in Colombia and Panama to these vital nodes, fortifying regional connectivity.

Ray Collins, Senior Vice President of Infrastructure and Corporate Strategy, Liberty Latin America, stated that the new system will seamlessly integrate into its existing subsea meshed platform, adding new routes and materially expanding its capacity. He also highlighted the system's potential for further expansion to complement capacity and diversity throughout the Caribbean.

Renato A. Tradardi, CEO, Gold Data, shared that the collaboration, combined with their terrestrial investment in Mexico, and offering the lowest latency route, is setting a new standard for connectivity between Mexico and the United States.

The subsea system will be divided in two segments, with the northern segment named GD-1. Liberty Networks and Gold Data will jointly invest in and operate GD-1, while Liberty Networks will retain full ownership of the southern leg of the system. Operation of the combined system is anticipated for the second half of 2026.
