Criminals in Ciudad Juarez. Luis Rodríguez Bucio, Deputy Minister of Security and Citizen Protection (SSPC), reported that 14 inmates who escaped after a riot at the Social Reinsertion Center (Cereso) are still at large. He added that 12 inmates have been recaptured so far and four could have died.

 

Risks to Democracy. President Andrés Manuel López Obrador responded to the intention of the National Electoral Institute (INE) to resort to any jurisdictional instance to stop the electoral “Plan B” and said those who put democracy at risk are the INE´s officials themselves. “They are the ones putting the election at risk,” he said. 

 

The president pointed out that the Supreme Court (SCJN) will have the responsibility of “saving democracy” and reiterated that the INE will resort to all legal instances to “defend democracy and guarantee the right of citizens to vote. .” 


 

Beatriz Gutiérrez. López Obrador clarified that his wife, First Lady Beatriz Gutiérrez Müller, does not work for the Mexican government. The Mexican president responded to criticism after the alleged dismissal of Gutiérrez Müller following the cancellation of the Office for Historical Memory. He said  that Beatriz Gutiérrez helps him voluntarily in certain matters .
