Mexican Peso. President Andrés Manuel López Obrador said the Mexican peso and economy is strong as ever, despite the negative forecasts. "The good news is that the peso continues to strengthen. We are at MX$17.37 per dollar. When we came to power, it was at MX$20 and the forecasts from our adversaries were that it was going to go up to MX$30 per dollar."

Recently, the Ministry of Finance and Public Credit (SHCP) stated that the Mexican economy is recovering at a significant level and that the Mexican peso is the second-best performing currency in the world. In 2022, the country's economic growth was favorable. 2Q22 was the best-performing quarter, with growth of 1.2% and cumulative GDP growth of 3%. Mexico’s economic activity recovered to significant levels, mainly because tourism increased by 45% compared to 2021. The peso’s appreciation is also due to external factors such as the US Federal Reserve and the strengthening of oil prices, which have allowed several emerging countries to report significant gains.

AMLO Will Quit Politics in 2024. President López Obrador said that after his six-year term ends in 2024, he will retire from politics. "I have it well thought out, I am going to retire completely. I will not participate in any political activity again. I believe in non-reelection, there has to be a generational replacement. We have already contributed in laying the foundations for the transformation."

In 2024, presidential elections will be held on June 2. According to a Reforma poll, MORENA is in the lead with 47 percent of the voters’ support. Meanwhile, PAN has 19 percent of the vote, PRI 18 percent and Movimiento Ciudadano 6 percent. MORENA's favorite presidential candidates are Foreign Minister Marcelo Ebrard and Mexico City Mayor Claudia Sheinbaum.

Mayan Train. Diego Prieto, Director, National Institute of Anthropology and History (INAH), informed that 53,385 Mayan culture artifacts have been rescued during Mayan Train works.

Many continue to resist the construction of the Mayan Train sections, which could damage the karst landscapes, harm the integrity of ground water reservoirs and cause significant deforestation, as well as destroy archeological and paleontological remains. Last year, Pietro reported that more than 29,000 archeological pieces had been recovered from the Mayan Train construction sites.
