The renovation of Mexico City International Airport (AICM) has reached 10% completion, with officials confirming that the project remains on track for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, which will kick off at Estadio Azteca in June 2026.

President Claudia Sheinbaum provided the update during her morning press conference, noting that the progress applies to a section of Terminal 1. “Today, the admiral presented in the Security Cabinet the 10% progress in the remodeling works of part of Terminal 1, and efforts are underway to ensure a situation like the one experienced a few days ago does not recur,” she said.

The AICM has faced operational interruptions at least twice this year due to heavy rainfall, which affected aircraft takeoffs and landings operations and caused disruptions within the terminal buildings.

In response, a task force was established, including the National Water Commission (CONAGUA), Mexico City Water Ministry, Ministry of Infrastructure, Communications and Transport (SICT), and the Navy to identify the causes of the flooding. Sheinbaum reported that issues were found in the airport’s drainage systems and are currently being addressed. She also noted that a major construction project will be implemented to prevent future disruptions.

“Some problems were found in the water exit systems, which are being resolved at this moment, and a major work will be carried out,” the president confirmed.

The administration plans to provide a broader update on World Cup preparations in the coming days. Sheinbaum said that, together with the governors of Jalisco and Nuevo León and Mexico City’s Head of Government, an overview will be presented detailing ongoing works in Mexico City, Guadalajara, and Monterrey, the cities hosting tournament matches.

The AICM renovation is part of Mexico’s larger infrastructure strategy to accommodate the expected influx of international visitors and ensure operational reliability during the event.
