The Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) concluded the Interregional Dialogue on Family Farming between Latin America and the Caribbean (LAC), the Near East, and North Africa (NENA), held July 7-8 in Cairo, Egypt. The event brought together participants from both regions to exchange experiences, build partnerships, and promote policy solutions that strengthen family farming systems.

“Family farming is not just about food production; it is about dignity, identity, and resilience. This interregional dialogue is a testament to our shared commitment to elevate the voices of family farmers and co-create policies that work for people and the planet,” says Abdulhakim Elwaer, Assistant Director General, FAO.

Jointly organized by the FAO’s regional offices for NENA and LAC, the dialogue was part of the activities of the Regional Technical Platform on Family Farming. It focused on the challenges and opportunities family and small-scale farmers face, highlighting inclusive innovation, climate resilience, and sustainable rural transformation.

“The platform is part of a broader strategic vision to strengthen regional collaboration and knowledge exchange while providing a space for sharing innovations and co-designing investment strategies,” says Máximo Torero, Chief Economist, FAO.

Over two days, government officials, farmers' organizations, researchers, youth leaders, and development partners took part in discussions on five main topics: digital technologies and inclusive business models, market access, agroecological and climate-resilient practices, access to credit and financial services, and secure access to land and natural resources.

Participants shared case studies, successful experiences, and regional progress in implementing the Global Action Plan of the United Nations Decade of Family Farming (UNDFF). They also explored ways to scale up effective approaches to help meet the Sustainable Development Goals.

The dialogue concluded with a forward-looking session on regional contributions to the upcoming Global Forum of Solutions on Family Farming and Rural Transformation. Participants highlighted the importance of interregional cooperation, knowledge sharing, and locally led solutions.

Outcomes from the event will inform global discussions and contribute to the implementation of the UNDFF by identifying priorities to empower family farmers as key players in building resilient agrifood systems and eradicating rural poverty.
