Coca-Cola FEMSA signed a collaboration agreement with Universidad Michoacana de San Nicolás de Hidalgo (UMSNH) to donate treated wastewater from its treatment plant for irrigation and maintenance of green areas at the university.

Since 2020, Coca-Cola FEMSA has donated 17,371m3 of treated water to the state of Hidalgo, contributing to the preservation of regional water resources. At the signing event, Yarabí Ávila, Dean, UMSNH, and Francisco Javier Vázquez, Plant Manager, FEMSA Morelia, emphasized the importance of this partnership. The agreement includes the construction of a pipeline system to connect the treatment plant with a storage tank at the university.

The donated water will be used for irrigating sports fields and green areas and revitalizing recreational spaces, including an artificial lake and a park accessible to both the university community and residents. This collaboration will also alleviate water stress on the University City well, which supplies the institution and nearby neighborhoods, thereby preserving potable water and enhancing the fertilization of green areas due to the nutrients in the treated water. The initiative will benefit over 58,000 students and surrounding communities.

“UMSNH will always be open to collaborations that benefit the community and society in general,” Ávila stated, expressing her intention to expand partnerships to include research projects, social services, and professional practices, thereby strengthening ties between the two institutions.

Vázquez highlighted Coca-Cola FEMSA's commitment to sustainability. “The company will always seek to be socially responsible, support communities, and contribute to the areas where it operates.” He clarified that the treated water donated will be used for various activities at the university, excluding human consumption, promoting the efficient use of water resources.

Coca-Cola FEMSA has similar agreements in Morelia, including one with the city government for public area irrigation and another with the Morelia Zoo for maintaining its green areas with recycled water.
