As the UK is set to become the fastest G7 country to adopt decarbonization strategies, it is looking to include the automotive sector in such a goal. For this reason, the UK Embassy in Mexico and the UK Consulate in Monterrey, Nuevo Leon, are hosting a commercial mission to explore the opportunities the Mexican market can offer and promote the opportunities UK companies can provide.
The UK government through the Embassy and the Consulate organized the commercial mission, which started with a networking dinner in Monterrey for representatives of the 10 British companies, as well as market and industry experts including: Francisco Gámez, Partner, Holland & Knight Mexico; and Héctor Tijerina, Executive Director, Invest Monterrey. From the UK government, Spencer Mahony, Deputy Trade Commissioner for Latin America and the Caribbean, and Rory O'Kane, British Consul in Monterrey, were also present.

At the dinner, attendees discussed key topics affecting Mexico’s automotive sector, including the electrification trend. Attendees also discussed the advantages of investing in Monterrey, which offers a highly-skilled labor force and a well-established supply chain. The companies’ representatives also had the opportunity to listen to legal advice on the different ways to enter the Mexican market and received information on the required taxes to establish operations in the country.

The dinner is one of the many different activities the British Embassy is organizing. The embassy will participate in the Proveedor Automotriz expo organized by the Automotive Cluster of Nuevo Leon in collaboration with the local government. It will take place on June 5-7 in CINTERMEX, Nuevo Leon, and is set to provide a platform for face-to-face interactions, technology promotion and business relationships. The event will feature conferences on relevant industry topics and business activities. As part of the British Embassy’s efforts to promote UK-based companies, it will set up a pavilion to host the 10 invited companies, which aim to promote their products to the Mexican market and seek business opportunities.

The British Embassy will also participate in America's Mobility of the Future 2023 (AMOF 2023), which will host its first edition in Latin America on June 6-7 in CINTERMEX. The fair will focus on future mobility solutions and seek collaboration between the public and private sectors. The fair, organized by Hannover Messe in collaboration with Nuevo Leon’s Ministry of Economy and the Nuevo Leon 4.0 Cluster, will offer an engaging program of conferences, panel discussions and mobility project presentations.

The UK delegation in Mexico believes the commercial mission has much to offer for both Mexico and the UK, as both countries have the potential to create synergies. "There is tremendous potential for UK technology to support the growth of Mexico's increasingly robust automotive industry and its transition to electric vehicles. We are excited about the prospects of further integration between UK and Mexican supply chains," says Mahony.
