Geotab and General Motors Mexico have announced a partnership to integrate telematics data directly from GM vehicles equipped with OnStar. This marks the first OEM integration of its kind for Geotab in Mexico and for GM in Latin America. The collaboration allows fleet operators to access real-time vehicle data without the need for external hardware, using an API-based integration for seamless and secure data exchange.
Through this partnership, Geotab will process and integrate data from GM vehicles, enabling fleet operators to optimize their operations while ensuring data security. The API integration establishes direct connectivity between Geotab’s platform and GM’s embedded OnStar technology, eliminating the need for additional installations or external devices.
According to Geotab, the company currently supports data collection from 157 OEMs and nearly 15,000 vehicle models worldwide. This collaboration strengthens Geotab’s position in the Mexican market, where the demand for integrated fleet management solutions is on the rise. The integration provides access to detailed vehicle data through Geotab’s MyGeotab platform, which consolidates fleet information into a single interface.
Fleet operators managing both internal combustion engine (ICE) and electric vehicles (EVs) from GM brands, including Chevrolet, Buick, GMC, and Cadillac, will benefit from real-time insights into vehicle performance. The platform offers reports on driver behavior, fleet safety, risk factors, and operational efficiency. For EVs, it also provides data on battery health, charge status, and charging times.
“This alliance not only reaffirms our commitment to innovation but also creates new opportunities for fleet operators in the region to access advanced technology that enhances sustainability, productivity, and safety,” said Michael Martin, AVP Business Development, LATAM & Asia Pacific, Geotab.
“At OnStar, we work every day to provide the best security and connectivity solutions for GM vehicle owners. Through this integration with Geotab, we extend telematics services to our fleet customers. The goal is to put technology at the service of our clients, ensuring fleet administrators have access to valuable information,” said Gonzalo Escobar, Director of Digital Services and Customer Experience, GM Mexico.
Industry trends indicate that the adoption of factory-integrated telematics in new vehicles has increased significantly, with 75% of cars sold in 2023 equipped with such systems, compared to 72% in 2022, according to IoT Insight.
