Mexico’s National Institute of Statistics and Geography (INEGI) reported a 11.6 percent increase in light vehicle sales in September 2022 versus the same month last year, for a total of 85,842 units. The industry reported a total of 778,527 accumulated units sold between January and September 2022, representing an increase of 2.72 percent versus 2021.

Nissan had most sales in Mexico, with 15.5 percent of the market share during September. The Japanese automaker has been the uncontested leader in sales of light vehicles in the country for the past 12 years. In 2022, Nissan has already sold 120,684 units while GM stands close with 118,313 vehicles. GM and Volkswagen came in second and third place in September sales, with 15.2 percent and 11 percent respectively.

In 2021, Nissan assembled 144,612 units and became the OEM with the highest production in Mexico during the year. “Nissan Mexicana’s manufacturing operations are a reason for pride for the company. The fact that we have positioned ourselves as the main brand in vehicle production for the domestic market reaffirms that Nissan aims to offer more equipped, secure, innovative and high-quality products to its public,” said Joan Busquets, Vice President, Nissan Mexicana Manufacture, as reported by MBN.

The Japanese automaker recently announced the start of production of the X-Trail 2023 in its manufacturing plant in Kyushu, Japan. This is one of the most popular SUVs in Mexico and has been the segment leader for different years, said Nissan.

"At Nissan, we are very excited about the arrival of the new Nissan X-Trail, a vehicle with which we reaffirm our commitment to take people to a better world, with innovative options that are redefining the future of mobility," said Rodrigo Centeno, Senior Marketing Director, Nissan Mexicana. This SUV provides reliability, performance and comfortability, said Centeno.

Nissan highlighted the importance of Mexico in its global operations. Last month, Nissan facilities in Mexico welcomed Ashwani Gupta, COO, Nissan Motor Corporation, to review the progress made in the company’s assembly plant in Aguascalientes, as reported by MBN. Through a US$700 million investment, the Japanese company seeks to compete in the Mexican EV market by offering one of its best-selling vehicles in the country, said Centeno.
