Cooperation Manufacturing Plant Aguascalientes (COMPAS), a joint venture between Nissan and Mercedes-Benz, confirmed it will cease operations on May 31, 2026. The closure reflects shifts in the automotive market, evolving consumer preferences, and recent US tariff measures affecting imported vehicles and parts.
The announcement follows prior staff reductions at the facility, which currently employs approximately 800 workers. COMPAS produces luxury models, including the Infiniti QX50 and QX55 and the Mercedes-Benz GLB, primarily for export to the United States and Canada.
“COMPAS reaffirms its full financial strength and payment capacity, which allows us to guarantee ordinary operations as previously agreed. All our contractual commitments will be fulfilled on time and in accordance with current commercial agreements,” the company stated.
The closure will occur in phases. Production of Infiniti models is scheduled to end in November 2025, while Mercedes-Benz assembly will continue until May 2026. A letter to suppliers emphasized the timeline: “Infiniti will be concluded during November of this year, and production of the Mercedes-Benz model will conclude in May 2026. The shareholders have decided to end operations at this plant on May 31, 2026.”
COMPAS was established in 2015 as a joint venture between Daimler and the Renault-Nissan Alliance, with an initial investment of US$1 billion. The facility spans approximately 110 hectares and has a production capacity exceeding 230,000 vehicles per year. At its opening, COMPAS created around 3,600 direct jobs. The plant was developed to meet high manufacturing standards for luxury vehicles, including specialized technical training for its workforce.
