Cybersecurity solutions provider Kaspersky reported its anti-ransomware free tools reached 360,000 downloads in 2023. The company views this milestone as proof of its dedication to providing users with accessible tools to counter the threats posed by ransomware, which in recent years have exponentially increased.

Kaspersky noted that 2023 marked its seventh anniversary as a key contributor to the No More Ransom initiative. Over the years, the company has contributed with access to its free decryption tools, aiming to combat the increasing threat of ransomware.

Between 2018 and 2023, Kaspersky aided over 2 million victims of ransomware worldwide. These tools are designed to counteract the encryption techniques employed by 39 distinct ransomware families, showcasing Kaspersky's commitment to providing effective and targeted cybersecurity solutions.

The company noted its contribution to the No More Ransom initiative as a founder member, along with Europol and the Dutch National Police, among others. It collaborates with law enforcement and the private sector to combat ransomware. According to Kaspersky, this collaborative effort provides decryption tools, educates the public about risks, and promotes best practices to counteract this pervasive cyber threat.

The company also launched its own No Ransom portal in 2015, which serves as a hub providing a comprehensive suite of resources and tools to combat ransomware infections. “As cyber threats continue to evolve, the collaboration between public and private sectors is becoming increasingly vital. No More Ransom and Kaspersky’s No Ransom portal exemplify how collective efforts can make a significant difference in helping victims and giving prevention advice,” said Jornt van der Wiel, Senior Security Researcher, Kaspersky Global Research and Analysis Team.

Kaspersky deems anti-ransomware tools as indispensable in light of the rising number of system vulnerabilities and the relentless efforts of cybercriminals to create new threats at an accelerated pace. The company highlighted its identification of over 4,000 new ransomware files in October 2023, marking a significant increase when compared to the 1,602 files detected in November 2023. “It is crucial for users to understand that paying ransoms to cybercriminals is never a solution. Instead, we strongly encourage individuals and organizations to rely on the available decryption tools and resources provided through collaborative efforts, allowing them to reclaim data without succumbing to extortion,” van der Wiel added.
