Credit card issuance in Mexico rose in the first half of 2025, driven primarily by BBVA, according to the National Banking and Securities Commission (CNBV).

By June, banks reported 37.1 million credit card contracts, up 1.8 million from 35.3 million a year earlier. BBVA led the market with 10.76 million cards, an increase of 1.3 million, followed by Banamex with more than 9.2 million, up roughly 600,000.

Other major issuers included Santander with 3.95 million cards, Banorte with 2.56 million, HSBC with 2.25 million, Inbursa with 1.26 million, and Scotiabank with 474,112.

Store-affiliated banks faced declines: BanCoppel dropped to 3.73 million and Banco Azteca to 984,923.

The delinquency rate remained stable at 3.30% at the end of June. BBVA’s latest “Consumption Monitor” forecasts continued, modest growth in private spending.
