IFT Launches National Infrastructure Information System
The Federal Telecommunications Institute (IFT) has launched the National Infrastructure Information System (SNII), an innovative platform that will host the national geo-referenced database of infrastructure used for telecommunications and broadcasting services in Mexico. This initiative adheres to the guidelines established in the Federal Telecommunications and Broadcasting Law, which assigns the IFT the responsibility of creating and maintaining this database.
The SNII is a robust, secure, and efficient information system that ensures the constant updating of infrastructure records. This system is fully integrated with the Institute’s Electronic Window, allowing all interactions to be carried out remotely and in an automated manner. Its design guarantees that processes are entirely electronic, ensuring agile and secure handling of information.
The primary goal of the SNII is to become a valuable information tool for concessionaires, licensees, and future participants in the telecommunications and broadcasting sectors. The system will facilitate infrastructure sharing, allow for investment and network growth projections, and support strategic decision making. The SNII will ultimately promote greater network deployment and a broader range of services with better quality and prices, benefiting Mexicans.
The system is designed to register information about active infrastructure, transmission media, passive infrastructure, rights of way, as well as public and private sites used for the provision of telecommunications and broadcasting services. The entities obligated to report this information include telecommunications and broadcasting concessionaires and licensees, as well as various departments and entities of the Federal Public Administration, Mexico City, state and municipal governments, autonomous bodies, and other public organizations and institutions.
To ensure the effective implementation of the SNII, the IFT issued a legal framework that details the requirements and procedures necessary for information registration. To support this initiative, training workshops were conducted between May and June of this year. These workshops, held both in-person and virtually, were attended by over 120 people in person and nearly 900 people virtually. Attendees included representatives from concessionaires, licensees, associations, and organizations related to telecommunications and broadcasting.
On June 12, the SNII received its first successful data submission from the concessionaire XEHB, marking a significant milestone in the system's operational launch. The SNII is now ready to receive information from all obligated entities. These entities will have from July to November of this year to capture and report the required information, according to the schedule published in the Official Journal of the Federation (DOF) on February 28.
