The federal government and the private sector will invest MX$134 billion (US$7.1 billion) to modernize and expand 62 airports across the country between 2025 and 2030, reports the Ministry of Infrastructure, Communications, and Transportation (SICT). The government expects this investment to result in over 32 million more travelers by the end of President Claudia Sheinbaum’s term.

The government stated this investment responds to a projected 4% annual growth in passenger numbers, which is expected to add 32 million more travelers by the end of this presidential term. In 2025 alone, passenger traffic has already increased by 8%, reports SICT. The plan is expected to generate over 200,000 direct and indirect jobs.

The investment is a public-private partnership. Public investment from the Ministry of the Navy (SEMAR) and the Ministry of National Defense (SEDENA) will total MX$22.7 billion over six years, with MX$8.5 billion destined for 2025.

Private airport operators, including Grupo Aeroportuario del Sureste (ASUR), Grupo Aeroportuario del Pacífico (GAP), and Grupo Aeroportuario del Centro Norte (OMA), will jointly invest MX$102.6 billion through 2030, with MX$20.9 billion allocated for 2025. An additional MX$7.2 billion in mixed investment will be managed by Aeropuertos y Servicios Auxiliares (ASA) and Grupo Aeroportuario de la Ciudad de México (GACM).

Key terminals slated for modernization and expansion include the airports in Mexico City (AICM), Puerto Escondido, Tepic, Cancun, Guadalajara, Tijuana, and Monterrey, notes SICT.
