Investments continue to pour into Michoacan's Port of Lazaro Cardenas, now with Hutchison Ports announcing an investment of US$220 million to expand the Specialized Container Terminal I by 50%, aiming to bring economic and social development to the region.
The Port of Lazaro Cardenas connects with over 40 countries and the 100 most important ports in the world. Its strategic location is vital for several industries, especially the automotive sector, as it handles an average of 16,500 units, of which 72% are imports.
Hutchison Ports LCT is a multipurpose terminal that handles the loading and unloading of loose, oversized, or overweight cargo, bulk cargo, steel-related products, automobiles, and other related products. According to Lazaro Cardenas Port Community, it has an area of 21ha.
In an interview with MBN, Marcelo Padilla, President, Association of Customs Agents of Lazaro Cardenas (AAALAC), mentioned Hutchison Port plans to increase capacity and acquire more machinery.
Hutchison Ports stated in a press release that the third phase will focus on constructing 345m of dock and expanding the area by 28.3ha. With this expansion, the terminal will have 1,275m of dock and yards covering 105ha, increasing the handling capacity from 1.3 million TEUs to 2 million TEUs per year.
Additionally, the terminal will have 25 RTG cranes and 10 QC cranes. Work on the terminal is set to begin in 2024.
"This investment is crucial to consolidate container movement at the Port of Lazaro Cardenas, which has seen an average annual growth rate of nearly 20% in the last 20 years," says Jorge Magno Lecona, Director General for Latin America and the Caribbean, Hutchison Ports.
In just the first half of 2023, Hutchison Ports surpassed a historic record in the Port System of Lazaro Cardenas by handling over 800 containers in an eight-hour shift, in addition to reporting a 60% increase in full import boxes, with a delivery fulfillment rate of over 85% within two hours during July, according to a statement by government of Michoacan.
In a press release, Hutchison Ports adds that it plans to reduce its carbon dioxide emissions by 45% by 2030. It further projects a reduction of 90% by 2050 thanks to the transition to clean energy sources.
