Sonora Contributes 30% of Mexico's Mining Production

Sonora secured its position as the leading mining destination in Mexico during 2023, as it accounted for over 31.4% of Mexico’s mining production. Furthermore, the globally leading Mobile Elevating Work Platforms (MEWP) provider, Lingong Heavy Machinery (LGMG) announced the inauguration of its manufacturing plant in Nuevo Leon.

Sonora Remains Mexico’s Mining Leader in 2023 

In 2023, Sonora fortified its position as a mining leader despite the uncertainty of the Mining Law and the suspension of concessions. Next year, the state is expected to start more exploration projects, which will bring an investment of US$1.5 billion.

Héctor Ortiz, President, AMSAC, highlighted the challenges facing Mexico's mining sector. Discussing the impact of the Mining Law reform, Ortiz emphasized the need for clarity and its compatibility with the country's energy transition. Recovery Works Begin at El Pinabete Mine

The recovery of the 10 bodies of the miners trapped at the El Pinabete mine began 497 days after the mining accident. The tragedy moved the government and the industry to call for more safety measures to prevent similar incidents.

Almaden Minerals Seeks CPTPP Consultation for Ixtaca Project

Canada-based silver company Almaden Minerals announced it filed a consultation request under the Comprehensive and Progressive Agreement for Trans-Pacific Partnership (CPTPP) to address the legal dispute between Mexican federal authorities and the company regarding Almaden’s Ixtaca project in Puebla. The filing is another escalation in Almaden and the government's almost one-year-long conflict.
