Torex Gold’s El Limon-Guajes (ELG) mine surpassed Nemont’s Peñasquito mine as Mexico’s largest gold producer in 2023. This is attributed to a four-month strike at Peñasquito, which resulted in reduced production. In other news, President-elect Claudia Sheinbaum announced that she would continue the legal dispute between China-based Ganfeng Lithium and the Mexican government, arguing that the result is most likely to favor the Mexican government.

ELG Ousts Newmont as Top Gold Mine Producer in 2023

Torex Gold’s El Limón-Guajes ELG displaced Newmont’s Peñasquito mine as the largest gold producer in Mexico in 2023. The decline in Newmont’s production is primarily attributed to labor disputes at Peñasquito, resulting in a four-month blockade. The strike also caused Sonora to displace Zacatecas as the leading gold-producing state after Zacatecas held the top rank in 2022.

ArcelorMittal, SNTMMSRM Reach Agreement to End 55-Day Strike

After a 55-day strike, the SNTMMSRM and ArcelorMittal have reached an agreement, allowing nearly 3,000 workers to return to work. Mediated by the Ministry of Labor and Social Welfare (STPS), the agreement mandates that ArcelorMittal increase wages by 8%, provide a package consisting of MX$17,000 (US$986) in grocery vouchers, full compensation for lost wages, and an external audit of the 2022 and 2023 fiscal years to ensure the accuracy of the profit-sharing (PTU) payments.

After 59 Days of Strike, Operations Resume at ArcelorMittal

After 59 days of striking, members of Section 271 of the SNTMMSRM lifted the blockade late Friday night and resumed operations on Saturday at ArcelorMittal’s steel plant in Lazaro Cardenas, Michoacan. While the plant is gradually resuming operations, the furnace area remains offline for preventive maintenance.

Minera Alamos Starts Mining at Nicho

Minera Alamos has reported progress at its Santana gold mine in Sonora. Mining and stacking activities began in June 2024 at the Nicho main zone deposit, resulting in approximately 900oz of gold being placed on the leach pad by the end of the month, reports the company.

Ganfeng Lithium to Lose Dispute Over Concessions: Sheinbaum

Sheinbaum announced that she would continue the legal dispute against Ganfeng Lithium, stating there are sufficient grounds for the company to lose the arbitration and its lithium concessions. Previously, López Obrador had indicated that the government would seek to reach an agreement with the company.
