Maersk, Hapag-Lloyd Launch Gemini Cooperation
On Feb. 1, Maersk and Hapag-Lloyd officially launched Gemini Cooperation, which aims to deliver a more flexible and interconnected ocean network. The partnership aims to achieve industry-leading schedule reliability of over 90% once fully implemented.
“We are now ready to commence the phase-in of the new network. Over the last year, we have carefully planned this to ensure that all our customers experience a smooth transition into the new network. With its innovative design, we believe our customers will benefit from increased reliability, flexibility, and more competitive products,” says Johan Sigsgaard, Chief Product Officer of Ocean, Maersk.
The initiative will integrate about 340 vessels into Maersk and Hapag-Lloyd’s shared ocean network, with the first sailings commencing on Feb. 1. Additional vessels will gradually transition to the new schedules in a phased approach designed to ensure a smooth transition for customers.
The transition period is expected to continue until late May, during which vessels will phase into the new network while exiting previous agreements Maersk and Hapag-Lloyd had with other carriers. By June, the network will be fully operational, with all vessels sailing under the Gemini schedule.
With this partnership, the companies are introducing an interconnected service network that delivers:
-
Unparalleled reliability with a target of 90% schedule reliability once fully phased-in across all Gemini Cooperation services.
-
Enhanced connectivity through an innovative hub and spoke model.
-
Accelerated sustainability efforts supporting the decarbonization of supply chains.
-
Commitment to deliver on these promises to enhance supply chains and work together towards mutual success.
Gemini Cooperation’s shared network primarily serves East/West trade routes and features 29 efficient mainliner ocean services, complemented by 28 agile intraregional shuttle services. The collaboration is designed to enhance service reliability, streamline operations, and provide customers with more consistent shipping solutions.
