Another Earthquake/Meeting with German President

Earthquake on September 19. Head of Civil Protection Laura Velázquez reported that yesterday's earthquake had a magnitude of 7.7 and the states that were most affected were Michoacan and Colima. Latest information reports two people  dead, 10 injured and 150 homes damaged. “After the first evaluation carried out by the authorities, we are sure that Colima and Michoacan were the states that had the most causalities and damages . In Colima, two people died and nine were injured.”

A new earthquake shook the central states of Mexico yesterday after a commemoration of 1985, 2017 quakes. Both occurring on September 19.  According to government figures, the1985 and 2017 quakes have caused losses totaling MX$356 billion.  In addition, authorities are also surveying damage and human losses in Colima, Michoacan, Mexico City, Aguascalientes, Guadalajara, Guanajuato, Queretaro, San Luis Potosí, Zacatecas, Puebla, Nayarit, Veracruz and Guerrero.

Homicides and femicides decrease. Minister of Security and Citizen Protection (SSPC) Rosa Icela Rodríguez reported that the incidence of intentional homicides and femicides decreased in August. Rodríguez stressed that the downward trend in these crimes shows that the national security strategy is working. “Today we live in better peaceful conditions and it is clear that our strategy is working. This past August many crimes have reached their lowest level in 5 years."

According to the SSPC, 2,624 intentional homicides were reported in August, 57 fewer than those reported in July and 205 fewer than those in May. So far in 2022, the number of homicides totals 20,772, resulting in May being the most violent month. The states with the highest number of homicides are Guanajuato, Baja California, Michoacan, State of Mexico, Jalisco and Chihuahua. Meanwhile, according to data from the SSCP, femicides have decreased by 33.6 percent. In 2021, 977 femicides were reported. The authorities announced that since the incidence of crime is declining, annual figures are expected to be lower.

Meeting with German president. President Andrés Manuel López Obrador announced that today he will meet with German President Frank-Walter and key businessmen to increase trade relations between the two countries. “Today we will welcome the president of Germany. We want to improve our relations with them.”

Currently, Germany is Mexico's main trading partner in the European Union and fourth in the world, and Mexico is Germany´s most important trading partner in Latin America. In 2021 trade between the two nations totaled US$24,773 million. Moreover, there are more than 2,000 companies with German capital in Mexico, employing more than 300,000 Mexicans. Walter’s visit was planned for March 2020. However, due to COVID-19 traveling restrictions, he had not been able to visit Mexico until now.
