UN, CONARED to Promote Sustainable Urban Development
The National Council for Urban Development (CONARED) and the United Nations Human Settlements Programme (UN-Habitat) formalized a collaboration agreement to promote initiatives supporting sustainable urban development in Mexico. The partnership seeks to align public policy proposals with the 2030 Agenda and the New Urban Agenda, while strengthening urban and territorial governance.
The agreement includes the design and delivery of training programs, technical assistance, and specialized consulting services, as well as the promotion and dissemination of content related to sustainable urban development. It also establishes mechanisms to build alliances among stakeholders to encourage coordinated actions at the national and regional levels.
Fernanda Lonardoni, Representative for Mexico, Cuba, and Central America, UN-Habitat, emphasized the importance of partnerships as a driving force for progress. “As our Strategic Plan 2026-2029 states, achieving impact at scale and improving access to adequate housing requires coalitions that foster and strengthen alliances based on the experience and resources of key actors in sustainable urban development,” she said.
The forum included four roundtable discussions moderated by UN-Habitat experts on the topics of land, legislation, financing, and monitoring. These sessions brought together representatives from various organizations and professional groups, who contributed their expertise through guided discussions to identify potential lines of collaborative action.
The agreement sets the groundwork for future cooperation between institutions and stakeholders to advance sustainable urban development and improve housing policies in Mexico.
