Mexico City Signs Pact to Promote Decent Work, Labor Inclusion
In a move to improve labor conditions, Inés González, Minister of Labor and Employment Promotion of Mexico City, signed a memorandum of understanding on dignified and productive work with representatives from 22 business and labor organizations. The signing emphasized collaboration to enhance employment standards and foster inclusivity in the workforce.
González highlights that the competitiveness of both companies and the city itself hinges on the well-being of workers, describing them as the driving force of economic development. The memorandum outlines four key priorities designed to address structural inequalities and promote sustainable growth in the labor market.
First, the initiative aims to ensure dignified employment opportunities for all workers, with particular attention to those who face systemic disadvantages. The memorandum also commits to compliance with international, national, and local labor standards to strengthen workplace justice. Additionally, it seeks to promote gender equality, eliminate discrimination, and recognize the value of caregiving work, while guaranteeing that women have greater access to employment opportunities. Lastly, it underscores the importance of training programs to enhance productivity and broaden career prospects for workers.
As part of the city’s broader labor policy, the ministry urges business and labor leaders to support Tecpantli Icpac, a new employment agency spearheaded by Mexico City Mayor Clara Brugada.
The memorandum gained the backing of prominent business associations, including the National Chamber of the Transformation Industry (CANACINTRA), the National Chamber of Commerce, Services, and Tourism in Small Business (CANACOPE), and the Spanish Chamber of Commerce, among others. Labor and union groups, such as the Mexican Workers’ Confederation (CTM) and the National Workers Union (UNT), also signed on to the agreement.
