As companies develop and evolve, it becomes increasingly straightforward to discern the patterns that differentiate certain employees – those who excel, standing head and shoulders above the rest, from those who stagnate or fail. A clear pattern I've identified for determining an employee's success is how they react in the face of adversity. It seems to be a universal truth that when employees encounter challenges or endure difficult periods, their attitude almost always determines if they will rise above and succeed, or stumble and fail.

Reflecting on all the cases I have witnessed, I've observed that employees who consistently underperform or fail to meet expectations often resort to blaming others or external factors. They shift responsibility onto their team, their customers, market conditions, and even the weather, to justify their lack of results. Unfortunately, these employees don’t achieve their goals. They are caught in a perpetual cycle of blame and justification, which hinders their growth and potential.

In contrast, the best employees, those who excel and consistently deliver impressive results, have one thing in common: they take full ownership and responsibility for everything that happens to them. Every mistake, every problem, every setback — they view these not as failures, but as opportunities to learn and grow. They accept and embrace the responsibility that comes with every aspect of their role.

Consider this scenario: A customer chooses not to purchase a salesperson’s product. Instead of resorting to blaming the product or the customer, they seek ways to enhance their sales pitch, striving to be better prepared for the next sale. If a team member is frequently late, they do not place blame on the individual. Instead, they seize this opportunity to address the entire team about the importance of punctuality, using the instance of lateness as a real-life example to emphasize the point.

Are they not achieving their goals? They do not lay the blame on the goals themselves, or claim they were unrealistic or unreachable. Rather, they introspectively analyze the activities they undertook during the month to identify what they could do differently in the following month. They seek to learn from their shortcomings and rectify their mistakes. They formulate an action plan and then diligently execute it, treating every error, every problem, and every adversity as an invaluable opportunity for learning and improvement.

This behavior pattern — choosing not to justify our adversity but to identify what we can change or improve — is what I refer to as taking full responsibility. It's a potent and transformational mindset. The most successful individuals, those who consistently perform at an elite level, are those who embrace full responsibility. They take charge of their circumstances and, as a result, are in a constant state of self-improvement and learning.

To adopt this mindset, we first need to define what we aim to achieve. We must recognize and take ownership of the problems that exist. It's crucial that we understand what is preventing us from achieving  the desired results, and then develop effective solutions to these problems. This mindset enables us to maintain high performance and achieve our objectives, even when faced with adversity.

When we adopt this approach, it has a profound effect on those around us. If we wish to inspire our employees and gain their commitment to our collective goals, the most effective method is to demonstrate full responsibility in our actions. When team members see their leader resolutely committed to results, always striving for improvement and self-betterment, they are naturally inspired to echo this commitment. They are more likely to invest fully in the team's objectives and put forth their best efforts.

The road to success is often not smooth or easy. It's invariably filled with obstacles and challenges. Often, we have no control over these hurdles. However, we can control our reactions and responses to these obstacles. We must resolve to do away with excuses, to cease blaming factors beyond our control, and to focus instead on self-reflection. Consider what actions or inactions on your part have contributed to the current situation and what could be done differently. Make the conscious decision to be better.

Rather than worrying about external factors, focus on self-improvement, for your benefit and that of your employees. Start practicing Full Responsibility in your daily life. It's when we do this that we can truly achieve outstanding results. You'll be amazed by the transformative effect it has, not only on you but also on your team and overall productivity.

Next Steps

Devote some time to reflecting on the concept of full responsibility. Contemplate your own responsibilities, and evaluate whether you are truly taking full responsibility for them. Rather than attributing blame to uncontrollable factors, ask yourself if you are using every situation, every occurrence, as an opportunity for improvement. How do you react to adversity? How do you respond when you discover a problem? Is there any behavior you wish to change within your team or among your peers? What could you do to exercise greater Full Responsibility? Start incorporating this concept into your actions and witness how the commitment of your team members increases. Draw the best from every situation and watch as it revolutionizes your effectiveness.
