Individuals with vision and hearing loss face unique challenges in the workplace when suitable accommodations are not provided. Mexican businesses are deploying initiatives and policies aimed at hiring and supporting vulnerable populations.
The International Labor Organization (ILO) estimates that about 1 billion people, accounting for 15% of the world's population, live with disabilities. Despite the challenges they face, individuals with disabilities possess significant potential for economic and social impact when provided with equal opportunities.
The employment rate for people with disabilities in Mexico currently stands at 47.2%, according to Mobility International USA (MIUSA). This equates to 4.33 million individuals who are successfully employed. In comparison, the overall employment rate for the total population in Mexico is 60.1%, with 73.50 million people actively engaged in the workforce.
Various technologies have emerged as invaluable tools to support employees with vision and hearing loss, such as accessible phones, high-visibility floor tape and paint, lighted reading glasses, screen magnification software, whiteboards and assistive listening devices. Furthermore, general accessibility features, including closed captioning, large print materials and adjustable workstations, contribute to creating an inclusive work environment for employees with disabilities.
Recognizing the importance of labor inclusion, the MVS Radio Foundation in Mexico is focusing on supporting individuals who are hearing impaired or deaf. By providing labor inclusion programs, the foundation aims to improve the quality of life for this community. The foundation actively engages with companies and offers valuable information and training to assist in the integration and inclusion of hearing-impaired and deaf employees in the workforce.
A survey conducted by OCC Mundial’s Professional Career Center highlighted that the adoption of policies designed to support persons with disabilities plays a key role in enhancing their quality of life. Businesses have a societal responsibility to ensure the inclusion and representation of people with disabilities in the workforce, says Valeria Uribe, Director Mexico, PADF. Recognizing disability as a natural aspect of diversity, companies are encouraged to create an environment that welcomes individuals with disabilities, allowing them to contribute and thrive.
