The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has announced US$20.5 million (MX$379.25 million) in grants for 25 airport projects across 14 US states and Puerto Rico. This funding is part of the US$25 billion commitment under the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law, which aims to enhance airport infrastructure and air traffic control systems over a five-year period.

Shannetta R. Griffin, FAA Associate Administrator for Airports, emphasized the program's focus on safety and sustainability. "These investments continue our vital work to keep passengers safe, improve their travel experience, and help airports be great neighbors," Griffin said. "We are demonstrating our commitment to safety, sustainability, and capacity for future generations."

The Airport Infrastructure Grant program funds projects such as terminal expansions, upgrades to baggage handling systems, runway safety enhancements, and noise compatibility improvements.

This announcement reflects the Biden-Harris administration’s ongoing efforts to modernize US infrastructure through the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law, which has secured significant long-term investments in transportation systems nationwide.

Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg highlighted the importance of these investments for the future of air travel. "Through the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law, the Biden-Harris Administration has made historic investments in our nation's airports," said Buttigieg. "With today’s funding announcement, we are ensuring that more airports across the country are ready to meet the rising demand for air travel."

Airports Benefiting from the Grants

  • Fernando Luis Ribas Dominicci Airport, Puerto Rico: US$4.2 million

  • Del Rio International Airport, Texas: US$3 million

  • Meridian/Key Field Regional Airport, Mississippi: US$1.7 million

  • Brownsville South Padre Island International Airport, Texas: US$1.5 million

  • H.L. Sonny Callahan Airport, Alabama: US$1.88 million for a new terminal.

  • John Glenn Columbus International Airport, Ohio: A new terminal is under construction, expected to be completed by 2029.

These airport projects are part of a broader initiative that has allocated over US$568 billion for 66,000 infrastructure projects across the United States. This includes nearly US$1 trillion in private-sector investments supporting clean energy and manufacturing industries.
