The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) is seeking public feedback to guide the development of its new Center for Advanced Aviation Technologies (CAAT), a hub designed to integrate advanced air mobility (AAM) and other emerging aviation technologies into the National Airspace System (NAS).
CAAT will address regulatory, technical, and operational challenges tied to cutting-edge aviation innovations, including powered-lift aircraft and autonomous systems. The center aims to facilitate research, testing, and collaboration to accelerate the adoption of these technologies.
A standout feature of CAAT will be its airspace laboratory and flight demonstration zones, offering controlled environments for testing and validating AAM operations. These facilities will ensure new aviation systems meet rigorous safety and performance standards before broader deployment.
Another focus is the establishment of testing corridors to evaluate air traffic control (ATC) requirements, operational procedures, and performance standards essential for AAM integration. These corridors will enable live and simulated testing of emerging aviation systems.
The FAA also prioritizes partnerships with industry leaders, academic institutions, and government agencies to accelerate advancements in aviation. Collaborative efforts will focus on technologies such as electric and hydrogen-powered aircraft, autonomous systems, and high-volume urban air mobility (UAM) operations, addressing regulatory and technical barriers.
As part of its mission, CAAT will conduct simulations and live demonstrations using piloted, remotely piloted, and autonomous aircraft within designated zones. These exercises will assess the safety and performance of AAM systems, particularly in high-traffic environments.
