The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has launched a new pilot program to accelerate the integration and commercial deployment of electric air taxis. The initiative will support at least five projects through partnerships between state and local governments and private-sector companies developing electric vertical takeoff and landing (eVTOL) aircraft.

The program was established by executive order from President Donald Trump in June.

Joby Aviation, one of the participating firms, stated: “Aircraft in the program can begin operations in select markets ahead of full FAA certification, a critical step in preparing for scaled commercial service.” Following the announcement, Joby shares rose 5%, while Archer Aviation gained 3%.

The FAA confirmed the program will cover a range of use cases, including short-range air taxis, longer-range fixed-wing flights, cargo and logistics, and emergency services such as medical transport or offshore energy support. Aircraft may be piloted, optionally piloted, or fully unmanned, typically weighing over 1,320 lbs (599 kg), and will use advanced technologies designed for safe integration into the national airspace system.

FAA Administrator Bryan Bedford said: “We will apply the lessons learned from these projects to support safe and scalable operations across the country.” US Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy added: “The next great technological revolution in aviation is here. The United States will lead the way, and doing so will cement America’s status as a global leader in transportation innovation.”

The program follows a milestone in June when BETA Technologies’ ALIA electric aircraft became the first eVTOL to land at New York’s John F. Kennedy International Airport, a key step in validating advanced air mobility (AAM) technologies in high-density urban airspace.

In October 2024, the FAA finalized comprehensive training and pilot certification rules for eVTOL operations, forming the regulatory foundation for this new initiative.

Globally, governments in China, India, and the United Arab Emirates are also advancing AAM strategies, with plans to launch passenger services as early as 2026.
