Guanajuato International Airport (BJX), also known as León International Airport, ranked among Mexico’s 10 busiest airports in 2025, handling 2.7 million passengers between January and October, according to federal aviation and tourism data.

Federal Tourism Minister Josefina Rodríguez said Mexican airports served a combined 157.2 million domestic and international passengers during the first 10 months of 2025, a 2.5% increase compared with the same period in 2024. Data compiled by the Federal Civil Aviation Agency (AFAC) show that domestic travel remained the primary driver of passenger traffic nationwide.

“157.2 million national and foreign passengers arrived at or passed through our airports, reflecting growth of 2.5%,” Rodríguez Zamora said. “Above all, domestic tourism is very important: 80% of Mexicans travel within our own country, and that explains the increase in these figures.”

Between January and October, 92.6 million Mexican residents traveled by air within the country, an increase of 3 million passengers year over year, representing growth of 3.3%. Federal authorities said the figures underscore the strength of the domestic market and its contribution to economic activity, particularly in regions with strong industrial and services sectors.

Within this national context, BJX ranked 10th in total passenger traffic. Mexico City International Airport (AICM) led the ranking with 36.9 million passengers, followed by Cancun with 24.4 million and Guadalajara with 15.3 million. Monterrey, Tijuana, San Jose del Cabo, Felipe Ángeles International Airport (AIFA), Puerto Vallarta and Merida rounded out the list of the country’s busiest airports, with León maintaining its position due to sustained demand linked to business travel, major events and route connectivity.

“Guanajuato’s presence in the national top 10 is not a coincidence; it is the result of a clear strategy to promote tourism, diversify segments and build visitor confidence in our state,” said María Robles, Guanajuato’s minister of Tourism and Identity.

State officials said the expansion and consolidation of air routes have supported passenger growth by improving access for both business and leisure travelers. The airport serves a region with a high concentration of automotive, manufacturing and logistics operations, as well as a robust calendar of national and international events.

Robles said rising air traffic is closely tied to the development of tourism products across the state. “We continue working to make Guanajuato an increasingly accessible and competitive destination,” she said. “Each flight that arrives represents an opportunity for well-being for our communities and for those who depend on tourism.”
