The second disbursement of funds to former employees of Mexicana de Aviación, which is derived from the sale of the airline’s assets, is expected to be completed in the first half of 2025.
The disbursement was delayed following a lawsuit filed by a group of trust workers from Mexicana de Aviación, who had won a ruling in their favor. However, an agreement has now been reached, clearing the way for the second payment to proceed.
The Ministry of Infrastructure, Communications, and Transport (SICT) is responsible for overseeing the disbursement process. While a definitive date for the second payment has not been set, both Eduardo Barrera, president, Mexicana de Aviación delegation in the ASPA union, and Fausto Guerrero, president, Association of Retired and Former Workers of Mexicana de Aviación (AJTEAM), remain optimistic that the payment will occur soon.
The first payment of MX$407 million was made in August 2023, accounting for half of the MX$816 million promised by the government under the administration of Andrés Manuel López Obrador.
The funds for this disbursement are sourced from the sale of various Mexicana de Aviación assets, including the airline’s brand, simulators, equipment, two properties, and spare parts. In total, MX$815 million worth of assets were sold to generate the necessary funds for compensating the workers.
Following a reassessment of the airline's real estate assets, the amount for the second disbursement is now expected to exceed MX$415 million, surpassing initial projections for the payout.
