The US Department of Defense has announced the deployment of approximately 3,000 additional military personnel to the US-Mexico border, following President Donald Trump’s directive to reinforce security operations. This deployment increases the total number of active-duty troops stationed at the border to about 9,000.
According to a statement from the US Northern Command (NORTHCOM), the deployment includes around 2,400 soldiers from the 2nd Stryker Brigade Combat Team (SBCT), 4th Infantry Division, and 500 troops from the 3rd Combat Aviation Brigade. These units will enhance border surveillance, logistical support, and operational coordination, though they will not participate in deportation activities.
“These deployments will provide additional mobility and capability to efforts aimed at halting the flow of illegal immigration and drugs at the southern border,” said Gregory Guillot, Commander General, NORTHCOM.
The Stryker Brigade, known for its rapid deployment and adaptability, will prioritize reconnaissance and logistical support. Its Stryker vehicles, eight-wheeled armored platforms, offer a balance of mobility, protection, and firepower, making them ideal for border operations. The brigade’s capability to be transported via C-130 Hercules aircraft within 96 hours ensures a swift response to operational needs.
Additionally, the General Support Aviation Battalion (GSAB), comprising approximately 650 personnel, will provide aviation support, including troop transport, medical evacuation, and cargo movement. The unit operates UH-60 Black Hawk helicopters for command and medical missions, as well as CH-47 Chinook helicopters for heavy-lift operations.
“These forces will arrive in the coming weeks, and their deployment underscores the department’s unwavering dedication to working alongside the Department of Homeland Security to secure our southern border,” said Sean Parnell, Press Secretary, Pentagon.
This latest deployment follows President Trump’s initial executive orders in January, which declared border security a national priority. By late January, the administration had already dispatched 1,600 Marines and soldiers, alongside 2,500 reservists, to bolster the border.
“Whatever is needed at the border will be provided,” said Pete Hegseth, Secretary of the Department of Defense.
