WestJet Expands Cargo Network to Latin America, Caribbean
WestJet Cargo will leverage the addition of five new passenger routes to enhance its cargo operations during the 2025–2026 winter season. The new destinations include Guadalajara and Tepic in Mexico, Panama City, Havana, and Managua. The airline also resumed operations at Mexico City International Airport (AICM) with year-round service from Calgary and Vancouver. These developments are part of a broader strategy to increase bellyhold cargo capacity across Latin America and the Caribbean.
According to the airline, overall departures will increase by 3% compared to 2024, reaching 305 routes and 62 destinations across Latin America, the Caribbean, and the United States. WestJet will expand capacity in the Latin American and Caribbean region by 6%, focusing on markets such as Mexico, Costa Rica, and the Dominican Republic.
“WestJet Cargo’s expanded winter schedule is a direct response to our customers’ needs for greater connectivity and reliable service to sun destinations and beyond,” said Amanda Ierfino, Vice President of Sales and Cargo, WestJet.
Ierfino added that the strategic expansion aims to support Canadian businesses in accessing international markets: “By strengthening our cargo network and investing in key routes, we are enabling Canadian businesses to grow and thrive, whether they are shipping domestically or internationally.”
Flights to Guadalajara and Tepic will operate seasonally during the winter, while service to Mexico City will be offered year-round. The airline emphasized that the new routes will unlock greater belly cargo capacity, maximizing the freight potential of passenger aircraft.
As part of its preparation for the winter schedule, WestJet has reconfigured aircraft previously operated by its low-cost subsidiaries, Sunwing and Swoop. “Strengthening our presence in Mexico and other high-demand regions allows us to provide better service options for customers looking to ship to and from these locations,” Ierfino said.
