The Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development (SADER) initiated regional forums on milk production under the Production for Well-Being Program. The forums aim to address climate change challenges in the food production sector, with a specific focus on milk, employing the Technical Support Strategy (TSS).

As Mexico grapples with a challenging year marked by a shortage of stored water, with reservoirs at 53% capacity as of December 2023, the livestock industry faces scrutiny for contributing to 20% of total greenhouse gas emissions, particularly methane, according to Víctor Suárez, Deputy Ministry of Food Self-Sufficiency, SADER.

Carrera emphasized the practical proposals already underway through the TSS in milk, such as the ensilage of agricultural residues to create nutritious feed for ruminants. Additionally, efforts include promoting cassava cultivation in tropical regions to reduce reliance on maize in livestock feed. Cassava, proven to thrive in adverse tropical conditions, exhibits adaptability to acidic and infertile soils, as well as prolonged drought periods.

Structured around key themes, the forums will explore the impact of climate change on milk production, as well as efforts to mitigate these effects, and the agroecological vision for the future of national dairy farming. Moreover, they will employ a multifaceted approach, featuring keynote addresses, producer experiences, field tours, and an agricultural market. The objective is to foster dialogue, share practical solutions, and shape a sustainable future for the dairy industry amidst climate challenges.

The initiative responds to the urgent need for the agricultural sector to address environmental concerns and adapt practices to ensure food security in a changing climate. As discussions unfold, stakeholders anticipate gaining valuable insights into collaborative strategies that balance production goals with ecological responsibility.
