Government Launches Pilot Plant for Screwworm Prevention

The government announced the launch of a pilot plant to prevent the spread of the new world screwworm (NWS) in Yucatan. In other news, Mexican freight transport organizations have suspended road protests after reaching an agreement with the government to address concerns related to agriculture and road safety.

Mexico Launches Screwworm Suppression Pilot in Yucatan

The Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development (SADER) has launched the Pilot Plan for the Suppression of the NWS in Yucatan. Under the program, coordinated actions will be implemented over 10 weeks to reduce the pest population and advance its control significantly.

Mondelēz México Slashes Packaging Waste at Paleta Payaso

Mondelēz México reported a reduction of more than 556mt of packaging from its Paleta Payaso product line following a redesign on both the 43.5g Paleta Payaso and the 25g Paleta Payaso Mini. According to the company, total packaging savings reached 556.77mt, including nearly 500mt of plastic, with the remainder consisting of cardboard. 

Mexico Agrees to Create National Strategic Grain Reserve

Agricultural producers and federal authorities agreed to create a national strategic reserve of staple grains. This initiative will lay the groundwork for a new agricultural model beginning in 2026. Following a series of dialogue sessions between representatives of the National Front for the Rescue of the Mexican Countryside (FNRCM) and government officials, a consensus was reached on Dec. 17 to establish a strategic food reserve. The proposal was put forward by the FNRCM as an alternative measure aimed at stabilizing prices for staple grains.

The strike was suspended following negotiations formally announced on Dec. 18, easing immediate risks to supply chains during the peak year-end holiday season.
