Tiendas Del Sol and Woolworth have announced plans to install nearly 5,000 solar panels across 16 retail locations in Mexico as part of a project to expand on-site renewable energy generation. The stores are located in multiple states, including Nuevo Leon, Tamaulipas, Chihuahua, Sonora, Guanajuato, Hidalgo, Guerrero, Tabasco, Morelos, Baja California, Baja California Sur, Yucatan and Quintana Roo. Installations will be carried out in partnership with Monterrey-based Energías Limpias de México.

The project will have a total installed capacity of 3.2 MWp and is expected to generate approximately 4,843.77 MWh of electricity annually. According to the companies, this level of generation will avoid an estimated 3,587 tCO₂e in emissions per year, equivalent to the carbon absorption of more than 53,800 trees grown over a 10-year period.

“Investing in solar energy is not only about economic savings. It is a statement of principles,” a company representative said. “We want to be an active part of the change the world needs.”

The project aligns with a growing trend among retailers in Mexico to deploy distributed generation systems to manage energy costs and meet sustainability targets, particularly in regions with high solar potential. In October, FIBRA Shop reported that 45% of the total energy consumption across its shopping centers came from clean sources, supported by the installation of solar panels at 15 properties.

That same month, Grupo Coppel announced that 710 of its properties — representing 40% of its retail stores — are now equipped with solar panels. Combined with a transition to LED lighting, energy-efficient air conditioning and increased use of rail transport, these measures helped Coppel reduce emissions by more than 51,000 tCO₂e. In June, the company said it was investing MX$8 million (US$446,326) to expand the number of facilities powered by solar energy to 890.
