In 2025, foods such as pork rinds, beer, coffee, and artisanal mezcal dominated online sales on the Mercado Libre Mexico platform. Globally, the digital food market has recorded significant growth in recent years.

Mercado Libre’s Orgullo Local 2025 report showed a surge in online searches for food products sold by small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs). This underscores the impact of initiatives such as the Hecho en México label, which promotes national production. Mercado Libre joined this program in May of this year.

Luis Pedraza, Commercial Director, Mercado Libre Mexico, said that through this collaboration, the company strengthens its commitment to the country’s economic development by boosting the visibility of products made in Mexico and supporting the growth of thousands of SMEs in its digital ecosystem. “The growth of Mexican brands is not just a consumption trend; it is a real driver of the country’s economic development,” he said.

According to the report, demand for domestically produced goods is increasing across Mexico, and local brands are positioning themselves as competitive alternatives to global offerings. However, product preferences vary by region. In northern states, consumers show particular interest in artisanal foods and beverages. The top-performing items include craft beer, which surpassed 6 million searches, and pork rinds, which generated 712,000 searches. Brands such as Cervecería de Colima and La Ramos stand out in local consumption.

In central Mexico, premium food products are gaining traction. Mexican chocolates exceeded 35 million searches, with brands like Chocolates Picard rising in prominence. In western states, interest centers on national beverages such as tequila, which recorded 8.4 million searches, with brands like Gran Malo strengthening its presence. Meanwhile, in the south of the country, natural and artisanal products lead purchases, including coffee with 92 million searches and mezcal with 1 million.

Other products with strong consumer appeal included leather footwear and textiles such as denim in the bajio and central regions. In southern and western Mexico, searches for furniture and hammocks grew notably during this period.

Food News Latam reports that in Latin America, the food categories with the highest online sales growth in 2025 were: healthy snacks, especially options with no added sugar, gluten-free, or vegan; artisanal and local products such as specialty coffee, natural oils, jams, and sauces; functional foods and superfoods including chia, turmeric, maca, spirulina, and matcha; gourmet pet food; and subscription boxes offering monthly kits with fresh items, fermented foods, or curated culinary experiences.

Globally, online food commerce remains one of the fastest-expanding markets. According to a Statista consumer market report, global revenues for food products reached US$680.1 billion in 2024. During this period, Confectionery & Snacks represented the largest segment, while Bread & Cereal Products, Meat, and Dairy Products & Eggs also held substantial shares. Additionally, an analysis from Market Research Intellect noted that the fresh food sector will reach a valuation of US$300 billion in 2025 and is expected to double by 2033, supported by a compound annual growth rate of 8.5%.
