The Ministry of Health (Ssa) and the Universidad Autónoma Metropolitana (UAM) held their first meeting to develop a framework agreement aimed at promoting strategic projects in food sovereignty, with a focus on public health and social equity.

The meeting emphasized the need to address the country’s nutritional challenges, particularly obesity and malnutrition in vulnerable communities. The Health Ministry highlighted that transforming the food system should be guided by evidence-based policy prioritizing population health.

Key topics discussed included strategies to promote the consumption of healthy and culturally appropriate foods, applied research using local ingredients, and the development of production and distribution models that strengthen national food sovereignty.

The initiative aligns with Plan México’s mission for scientific, technological, and innovation development, as well as food sovereignty. UAM expressed its commitment to leverage its academic and scientific capacity in support of the strategy, which integrates health, nutrition, and sustainable development. Meanwhile, Ssa noted that the agreement will reinforce public policies aimed at guaranteeing the right to health and nutrition for all Mexicans.

Officials stressed that interinstitutional collaboration is essential to ensure access to nutritious, sufficient, and high-quality food. The planned signing of the framework agreement will open new avenues for technological innovation, professional training, and public policy design focused on transforming the country’s food system.

This first meeting marks the beginning of a strategic alliance between academia and the health sector to advance an ethical, sustainable, and socially responsible food model that safeguards the health of the Mexican population.
