The GDP of the Mexican primary sector experienced a year-on-year increase of 5.3% in September 2023, while agricultural exports saw a rise of 11.4%. According to INEGI, the GDP for agricultural activities increased 3.2% during the first nine months of 2023, surpassing the secondary and tertiary sectors. Meanwhile annual growth for the sector rose 5.3%, as reported by the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development (SADER).
During the same period, the value of the country's agricultural and fishing exports reached US$1.3 billion, marking a yearly increase of 11.4%, and confirming a five-year upward trend. SADER noted that in September, the most significant increases were observed in the export figures for avocado, with a growth of 34.6%; cucumbers at 30.9%; citrus fruits with a 19.5% increase, and fresh vegetables, which saw an 11.7% rise.
SADER highlighted that Mexico ranks eleventh in global food production and stands among the Top 3 performers for avocado, tomatoes, berries, nuts, lemons, mangoes, peppers, lettuce, asparagus, and onions. Likewise, the ministry noted that the country is also the sixth-largest global producer of eggs, poultry, and beef. Additionally, it ranks 17th in fish and aquaculture production, where it leads in shrimp and octopus.
SADER underscored that the 2020-2024 Sectoral Agriculture Program aims to achieve food self-sufficiency, enhancing the well-being of rural populations by connecting small-scale producers, and promoting sustainable production practices in the sector.
Last month, Victor Suárez, Deputy Minister of Food Self-Sufficiency, SADER, urged the international community to address food insecurity worldwide during the Committee on World Food Security (CFS) organized by FAO, as reported by MBN. “We respectfully call for a courageous approach, grounded in humanity and in adherence to international law, to reaffirm the human right to food,” said Suárez during the event.
“These advancements are the result of ongoing efforts to ensure the country's food security. These efforts include increasing production capacity, enhancing the national phytosanitary status, and reducing post-harvest losses and waste at various stages, from the producer to the distributor and ultimately the consumer,” stated SADER.
