BYD Unveils Yangwang U8 with Water Floating Capability
Chinese automaker BYD has unveiled the Yangwang U8, a luxury plug-in hybrid SUV showcased at the Geneva car show, boasting a unique feature of being able to float in water in case of accidents.
Weighing approximately 3.5 metric tons, this model offers distinctive capabilities such as sideways parking and executing a complete turn on the spot, facilitated by four electric motors, with one embedded in each wheel.
Although currently available exclusively in China, BYD is considering the possibility of exporting the Yangwang U8 to other markets. However, modifications may be necessary to meet regional requirements. Guillaume Calvar, BYD's marketing manager for France, indicated that while limited distribution in certain European markets is conceivable, the vehicle's adaptation may be necessary.
Since its launch in November, BYD has reported selling 3,653 units of the U8 by the end of January, with prices starting at MX$2.6 million in China.
Regarding expansion plans into European markets, BYD remains undecided about introducing its luxury Yangwang brand. Instead, the company is currently prioritizing its electric and hybrid vehicle lineup, along with the launch of its premium Denza brand.
