Ferrari has postponed the release of its second fully electric vehicle to no earlier than 2028, citing limited market demand for high-performance luxury EVs, according to two sources familiar with the company’s internal planning.

The Maranello-based carmaker had initially scheduled the second EV for a 2026 launch, but a source said, “Real, sustainable demand is non-existent for an electric sports car.” Ferrari declined to comment on the delay.

The company is still set to unveil its first electric vehicle in October 2025, with customer deliveries beginning in October 2026. The model, developed in part with former Apple Chief Design Officer Jony Ive, is expected to cost over US$500,000. A source familiar with the project said it will be a large model, but not an SUV, and was described internally as a symbolic milestone rather than a volume driver.

The second EV model, seen as central to Ferrari’s long-term electrification strategy, was originally postponed by one year and now pushed further. One of the sources said the second vehicle is intended to follow a typical Ferrari cycle of 5,000–6,000 units over five years, which current EV demand levels cannot support.

Ferrari introduced hybrids in 2019 and has committed to electrification, though it has yet to publicly confirm plans beyond its first EV. Several competitors have taken similar steps; Lamborghini delayed its first EV to 2029, and Porsche has scaled back EV plans due to soft demand for the Macan and Taycan. Maserati canceled an electric MC20 earlier this year.

Ferrari will present its updated long-term business plan to investors on Oct. 9.
