General Motors announced it will relocate Cadillac Escalade production from its Arlington, Texas, facility to the Orion Assembly Plant in Michigan in early 2027. The move also includes Chevrolet Silverado and GMC Sierra pickups, currently built in Fort Wayne, Indiana, as part of GM’s strategy to expand internal combustion vehicle capacity in response to sustained consumer demand.

In a statement, GM confirmed the decision aims to better align production capacity with market demand. The Arlington facility will continue assembly operations for large SUVs, including the Chevrolet Tahoe, Chevrolet Suburban, and GMC Yukon.

In June, the company announced a US$4 billion investment in domestic production facilities, reinforcing GM’s broader commitment to US manufacturing. The investment comes amid ongoing trade policy concerns, including 25% tariffs on imported vehicles and parts.

The move also transforms Orion’s role. Originally envisioned as a dedicated electric vehicle (EV) factory, Orion will now support both traditional gasoline models and EVs. This marks a shift from GM CEO Mary Barra’s 2021 ambition to fully transition to EV-only production by 2035. The change reflects evolving consumer preferences: while electric vehicles remain a long-term priority, current demand still favors gasoline-powered vehicles.
