General Motors (GM) is leveraging artificial intelligence and machine learning to accelerate the deployment of electric vehicle (EV) charging stations across the United States, addressing concerns about availability. This initiative, set to roll out in 2025, aims to create a more reliable and accessible charging network, which is crucial for increasing EV adoption among consumers.

GM’s partnership with EVgo, Pilot Travel Centers, and ChargePoint aim to add 2,850 direct current (DC) fast charging stalls in major US metropolitan areas. This includes the installation of 400 high-power 350kW chargers at flagship locations. According to GM, these new charging stations will help close gaps in EV infrastructure for both long-distance travel and everyday use.

"Although GM’s EV sales reached an all-time high in 2024, uncertainty about how to find charging stations remains a hurdle for many prospective customers," the company stated.

The selection of new charging station sites involves using predictive analytics and geospatial algorithms to analyze EV traffic patterns. These AI tools approach site selection as a mathematical optimization problem. GM’s data scientists then create detailed maps to illustrate the decision-making process.

Once the AI model identifies potential locations, GM collaborates with partners, including Pilot Flying J and EVgo, to implement the charging stations. The collaboration with Pilot Flying J focuses on installing chargers at travel centers, where EV drivers can enjoy amenities such as dining, restrooms, and other services while their vehicles recharge.
