Mexico City's Ministry of the Environment (SEDEMA) launched the Strategy for Tire Waste Management initiated in collaboration with Geocycle Mexico, a subsidiary of Holcim Mexico, to tackle tire waste from clandestine dumps and public areas

Since the agreement's signing three months ago, over 5,600 tires have been processed as alternative fuel for cement production. The initiative has been implemented in Xochimilco and Gustavo A. Madero, and seeks to expand to additional municipalities, addressing public environmental concerns posed by tire dumping in public spaces and environmentally sensitive areas such as green spaces, ravines, and protected natural areas, where they are also fire risks.

SEDAMA plans to provide collection points for tire waste through its Reciclatrón Program, promoting integrated waste management practices that reduce reliance on fossil fuels and mineral extraction. Proper management is also expected to significantly decrease greenhouse gas emissions and other secondary residues released from improper open-air incineration.

Aligned with Mexico City's Zero Waste principles and Circular Economy Action Plan, the 2021-2025 Waste Management Program underscores SEDEMA's commitment to ensuring proper handling of accumulated tire waste from storage sites across municipalities. This initiative not only safeguards the environment for Mexico City residents but also mitigates fire risks and toxic emissions associated with tire incineration, reducing potential urban environmental impacts caused by their water-stagnating bends, states the ministry.
