Over one-quarter of households in Mexico have adopted smart devices, reveals the 2024 National Survey on Availability and Use of Information Technologies in Households (ENDUTIH). This data indicates an acceleration in the technological transition of the domestic market and the potential consolidation of AI as an integral component in home appliances.

“We are seeing growth [in adoption] of over 200% in the last year, and connected appliances now represent more than 10% of the market in the region,” says Diego Buteler, Director of Digital Appliances, Samsung Electronics Latin America, to El Sol de México.

The penetration of AI into Mexican households stems from multiple interrelated factors that have evolved over the last decade. Data from Samsung shows that internet access in Mexican homes grew from 29% in 2013 to 71.5% in 2023. This digital infrastructure serves as the foundation for the smart home ecosystem.

Consumer demand has also shifted, driven primarily by two motivators. First, ease of use has emerged as a key incentive for adoption. Samsung findings reveal that 40% of consumers consider operational simplicity the main reason for switching to an AI-powered device. Users seek technologies that streamline daily routines, such as washing machines that detect fabric types to adjust washing cycles or vacuum cleaners that regulate suction power based on floor type.

Second, sustainability has become an influential purchase criterion, especially among younger consumers. For example, refrigerators equipped with internal cameras can help inventory contents, reducing the frequency of door openings and minimizing cold air loss.

Market Projections

Mexico's smart home market shows significant potential. According to Statista, revenue in the sector is expected to reach US$2 billion in 2024. More notably, the sector’s compound annual growth rate (CAGR) is projected to exceed 10%, pushing the market to nearly US$3 billion in the next five years. In terms of household penetration, 74% of homes in Mexico are expected to feature at least one smart device this year. This figure could surpass 95% by 2029. These projections place Mexico among the top three fastest-growing countries in Latin America within this sector.

Internet penetration is leading companies to change their strategy from selling standalone products to offering integrated ecosystems. Samsung’s AI Home, for example, allows devices to operate through centralized platforms rather than independently. The platform has already reached 65 million users in Latin America, with Mexico ranking seventh globally for registrations, says Samsung.
